What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counselling, is a type of mental health treatment. In therapy, clients work one-on-one with a trained mental health clinician in a safe, supportive, and confidential environment, either online or in-person. 

 

Often used in conjunction with medication, talk therapy helps to alleviate mental distress. It provides relief to individuals, couples and families suffering from a broad range of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties.

For some people, these issues are complex and meet the criteria for diagnosis of a mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety.

 

But for others, talk therapy may simply serve as a safe place to discuss feelings and emotions triggered by their daily stressors, a medical illness, relationship issues, grief and loss, or the impact of a specific trauma.
